How to apply for SSDI in Minnesota?

Updated 07/08/2025

If you are unable to work due to a severe medical condition in Minnesota, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. SSDI provides monthly financial assistance to individuals who have paid enough into the Social Security system and can no longer work due to their disabilities. Understanding the application process thoroughly will improve your chances of a successful claim.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Determine Your SSDI Eligibility

Before applying for SSDI, confirm that you meet both non-medical and medical eligibility requirements:

  • Work Credits: You must have worked long enough in jobs covered by Social Security. Generally, you need 40 work credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years. Younger applicants may qualify with fewer credits depending on their age.
  • Disability Definition: You must have a severe medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death, and it must prevent you from engaging in Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). In 2025, SGA is defined as earning more than $1,470 per month ($2,460 if blind).

2. Gather All Necessary Documentation

To strengthen your application, gather the following:

  • Personal Information: Social Security number, birth certificate, and proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful residency
  • Work History: Names and addresses of past employers, dates of employment, and detailed descriptions of your work duties
  • Medical Records: Names and contact information for all doctors, hospitals, and clinics involved in your treatment, along with treatment dates
  • Medications: List of all current medications, dosages, and prescribing doctors
  • Financial Records: Recent W-2 forms or federal tax returns if self-employed

Having these documents ready will prevent delays and ensure you provide complete and accurate information.

3. Choose How to Apply for SSDI in Minnesota

A. Apply Online

The fastest way to apply is through the SSA online portal:

  1. Visit www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability
  2. Create or log in to your My Social Security account
  3. Complete the SSDI application, ensuring all fields are filled out thoroughly

Applying online allows you to save your progress and submit additional documents electronically.

B. Apply by Phone

If you prefer to apply over the phone, call:

  • SSA national number: 1-800-772-1213
  • TTY users: 1-800-325-0778

A representative will assist you in completing your application and explain required next steps.

C. Apply In-Person

You can also apply in person at your local Social Security office in Minnesota. To reduce wait times, schedule an appointment by calling the SSA in advance.

4. What Happens After You Apply?

After submitting your application:

  1. SSA Reviews Non-Medical Eligibility: They confirm your work history and contributions to Social Security.
  2. DDS Evaluates Medical Eligibility: Your case is sent to Minnesota’s Disability Determination Services (DDS) for a thorough medical review.
  3. Additional Medical Exams: If needed, DDS may request a Consultative Examination (CE) with one of their contracted doctors to gather further information.
  4. Receive a Decision: You will receive a written decision by mail. SSDI initial decisions can take 3 to 6 months, though timelines vary based on case complexity and documentation completeness.

5. If Your Claim Is Denied

Do not lose hope if your application is denied. Many SSDI applications are initially denied, but you have the right to appeal through:

  • Request for Reconsideration
  • Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) hearing
  • Appeals Council review
  • Federal court review if necessary

Each stage has strict deadlines, so acting quickly is critical to keep your case active.
