How long does the disability process take in Minnesota?

Applying for Social Security Disability benefits in Minnesota can be a lengthy process. Understanding the timeline helps you set realistic expectations and plan accordingly. While each case is unique, there are general stages that most applicants go through, each with its own time frame.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Initial Application Stage

The first step is filing your initial application for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). On average, it takes:

  • 3 to 6 months to receive a decision at this stage.

Many applications are denied initially, even when applicants meet eligibility requirements. If this happens, don’t be discouraged—you have the right to appeal.

Reconsideration Stage

If your initial claim is denied, you can request a reconsideration. During this stage:

  • It typically takes 2 to 4 months to receive a decision.

Reconsideration involves a complete review of your claim by someone who was not involved in the original decision. Only a small percentage of reconsideration requests are approved.

Hearing with an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)

If your reconsideration is also denied, the next step is to request a hearing. This is often where many applicants find success, but it can take time:

  • The wait for a hearing in Minnesota can range from 12 to 18 months, depending on the backlog at your local Office of Hearings Operations (OHO).

After the hearing, it may take 2 to 3 months to receive a decision.

Appeals Council and Federal Court

If the ALJ denies your claim, you may request a review by the Appeals Council or file a lawsuit in federal court. These final stages can take several additional months or longer, depending on the complexity of your case and court scheduling.

Total Timeline Overview

For most applicants in Minnesota, the full disability process—from the initial application to a final decision—can take anywhere from 6 months to over 2 years. The actual duration depends on whether your claim is approved early or requires multiple levels of appeal.
