How long do disability payments last in Minnesota?

If you’ve been approved for Social Security Disability benefits in Minnesota, it’s natural to wonder how long those payments will continue. The duration of your benefits depends on which disability program you’re receiving—either Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI)—and whether your condition continues to meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disability.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

SSDI: How Long Payments Last

If you’re receiving SSDI benefits in Minnesota:

  • Payments will continue as long as you remain disabled and unable to engage in substantial gainful activity (SGA).
  • SSDI benefits are not time-limited—they can continue for years, even decades, as long as you continue to qualify medically and financially.
  • The SSA conducts Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) every 3 to 7 years to determine whether you’re still eligible.

You’ll stop receiving SSDI benefits if:

  • Your condition improves, and you can return to work at the SGA level
  • You reach full retirement age, at which point your benefits convert to retirement benefits (without any interruption in payments)

SSI: How Long Payments Last

If you’re receiving SSI benefits in Minnesota:

  • Payments continue as long as you meet disability, income, and resource requirements.
  • Like SSDI, SSI recipients also undergo CDRs to verify medical eligibility.
  • If your financial situation changes (such as getting a job or receiving other income), your SSI benefits could be reduced or stopped.

Minnesota also supplements SSI with a state-funded payment (Minnesota Supplemental Aid), which may continue as long as you qualify for federal SSI benefits.

Can Disability Payments Be Reinstated?

If your benefits stop but you become disabled again within 5 years, you may qualify for Expedited Reinstatement (EXR)—a quicker way to restart benefits without reapplying from scratch.
